Listed below is an article on the Palace on Wheels, the Ist luxury train to traverse the rugged landscape in Rajasthan.

CANADIAN JOURNAL: THE INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY TRAVELLER (JULY1991 EDITION on PALACE ON WHEELS RAIL TRAVEL): "If I could invent an ideal train, it would be exotic, adventurous, comfortable and stylish. My dream train would traverse a landscape that was more rugged than pretty. It would call at cities where one could be amazed rather than amused... India's Palace-on-Wheels met all of these expectations... The Palace-on-Wheels presents a much richer - and to my taste a more satisfying - interpretation of luxury by being an authentic part of its fascinating surroundings...Each day aboard the Palace-on-Wheels brough its own delights. We usually arrived in a new city just after breakfast and set out for a day of exploration with local guides. We generally took a tour bus, with elephants, camels, and motorboats varying the travel mix. Lunch would be often awaiting us in a Maharajah's stationary palace - Dr S Dandapani, the dean of Indian rail tourism can mail Palace-on-Wheels tickets along with Indrail passes, worldwide"

During the early stages of operation, The Palace on Wheels (run by Rajsthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways) was a metre gauge train with individual cabins and shared shower/toilet facilities. After this the Indian Railways brought in broad gauge to tracks of Rajasthan. Now each one of the cabins in the carriage have en-suite shower/toilet facilities in a new broad gauge train whilst trying to maintain the charm of the old Maharjah's carriage reflected in some of the furnishings of the train. Ever since then, several new luxury trains have been introduced in India with increasing levels of comfort such as the Golden Chariot covering the state of Karnataka (run by Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation) and then the Indian Maharajah starting in Mumbai and concluding in Delhi and vice-versa (covering Maharashtra & Rajsthan and run by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways) and then Royal Rajasthan on Wheels (run by RTDC and Indian Railways covering Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh) and now the new luxurious Maharajah's Express (run by Indian Railways marketing wing covering Rajasthan , Madhya Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh).

Note: All products in the website are being reviewed in view of the current pandemic on account of the coronavirus. As far as the luxury trains are concerned we are not clear which products are actually going to be running once the lockdown is lifted and which ones we are likely to promote as a group tour. At this point (i.e. when the website was being updated in late Dec 2020 / early Jan 2021), we regret that we are unable to recommend travel from the UK to the majority of the countries in Asia that we deal with. We are hoping that the situation will improve (not only for the anxiously waiting travellers and the tour operators in the UK but also for the thousands of people connected with the travel trade who are more than just associates for us.). When and how quickly travel is likely to resume is unknown to us with the earliest time likely to be in the autumn of 2021. Many of the products may need to be changed at the early stages for the safety of the travellers and the locals at these countries.
